Hazards and Protection.
Storage
Keep containers tightly closed in a well ventilated area away from food products. Keep away from heat and water.
Handling
All chemicals should be considered hazardous. Avoid direct physical contact. Use appropriate, approved safety equipment. Untrained individuals should not handle this chemical or its container. Handling should occur in a chemical fume hood.
Protection
Goggles, polyvinyl chloride or neoprene gloves, filter type respirator, chemical aprons.
Respirators
Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
Small spills/leaks
Keep material out of water sources and sewers. Build dikes to contain flow as necessary. Land spill: Dig a pit, pond, lagoon, holding area to contain liquid or solid material. Cover solids with a plastic sheet to prevent dissolving in rain or fire fighting water. Water spill: Neutralize with agricultural lime (CaO), crushed limestone (CaCO3), or sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). Add soda ash (Na2CO3). Adjust pH to neutral (pH=7). Use mechanical dredges or lifts to remove immobilized masses of pollutants and precipitates.

Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases.

Health.
Exposure effects
Blood pressure may be decreased following an iron overdose. Lethargy, restlessness or confusion may be seen early in the poisoning. Convulsions and coma may occur in later phases. Case reports of pregnant women who have received early aggressive treatment (decontamination and/or deferoxamine) have described good fetal outcomes.
   Ingestion
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and gastrointestinal hemorrhage may develop.
   Inhalation
Noncardiogenic pulmonary edema may develop with severe intoxication.
   Skin
Severe thermal burn with ferrous sulfate slurry has caused classical symptoms of ingested iron poisoning.
   Eyes
Irritants may cause swelling, redness and pain at any site, especially at mucous membranes. The mouth, nose, and eyes are susceptible to these effects.

First aid
 
   Ingestion
The possible benefit of early removal of some ingested material by cautious gastric lavage must be weighed against potential complications of bleeding or perforation. Activated charcoal activated charcoal binds most toxic agents and can decrease their systemic absorption if administered soon after ingestion. Activated charcoal: administer charcoal as a slurry (240 ml water/30 g charcoal). Usual dose: 25 to 100 g in adults/adolescents.
   Inhalation
Move victim to fresh air. Apply artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult.
   Skin
Remove contaminated clothing and wash exposed area thoroughly with soap and water. A physician should examine the area if irritation or pain persists.
   Eyes
Immediately flush with running water for at least 20 minutes.
